After a stellar performance, it came down to the last 10 minutes for John John Florence to win his first In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave invitational event. His last wave score (see below) took him ahead of big wave legends Shane Dorian and previous winner Ross Clarke-Jones.
John John described his win as "one of the most special moments of my life, for sure", then adding "This event's only run a couple of times in my whole life, and for me to be a part of it is amazing. I'm just overwhelmed with adrenaline. Just from the whole day, looking at the big ones like 'ahh, am I gonna go or not?"
Today's conditions down at the contest site were simply massive, with waves up to 60 feet pounded into the North Shore's famous Waimea Bay. Clyde Aikau, brother of Eddie Aikau and a competitor in the line up (at 66 years old!), said that it's the best Waimea Bay he's seen in over 40 years.
